With the general shift towards spectroscopy in the European community ESO is investing money and efforts to stimulate instrument development for the VLT and the future telescopes. The emphasis is set on throughput, stability and multiplexing capacity. I will present one completed (HARPSpol) and one on-going project (SIMPLE/CODEX) in the area of high-resolution spectroscopy aimed at precise line shape and position measurements.
