The Astronomical Council of the USSR Academy of Sciences was founded in December 20, 1936, by a Resolution of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Protocol №27). On the basis of the Decree Of the President of the RSFSR November 21, 1991 № 228 “On the organization of the Russian Academy of Sciences” the Institute became a part of the Russian Academy of Sciences as the Institute of astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In accordance with a Resolution of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences December 18, 2007 № 274 the Institute of astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences was renamed into the Establishment of the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of astronomy RAS. Resolution of the Presidium of the RAS December 13, 2011 . № 262 changed the type and the name of the Institute from the Establishment of the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of astronomy RAS into the Federal state budgetary institution of science Institute of astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences.”.
