The Astronomical Council of the USSR Academy of Sciences was founded in December 20, 1936, by a Resolution of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Protocol №27). Its main task was to coordinate studies in the field of ground-based optical astronomy that were carried out in the USSR by astronomical institutions, belonging to the Academy of Sciences and to other organizations. Not being limited to functions of coordination only, the Astronomical Council (Astrosovet) gradually evolved from a purely coordinating agency into a developed scientific institution and as a result it was transformed, according to the Resolution of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences December 11, 1990, № 1327 into the Institute of astronomy of the USSR Academy of Sciences. On the basis of the Decree Of the President of the RSFSR November 21, 1991 № 228 “On the organization of the Russian Academy of Sciences” the Institute became a part of the Russian Academy of Sciences as the Institute of astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In accordance with a Resolution of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences December 18, 2007 № 274 the Institute of astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences was renamed into the Establishment of the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of astronomy RAS. Resolution of the Presidium of the RAS December 13, 2011 . № 262 changed the type and the name of the Institute from the Establishment of the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of astronomy RAS into the Federal state budgetary institution of science Institute of astronomy of the Russian Academy of Sciences.”. In accordance with the Federal law September 27, 2013 № 253-FL “On the Russian Academy of Sciences, reorganization of the state academies of Sciences and Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of the Russian Federation” and the order of the Government of the Russian Federation December 30, 2013 № 2591-p, the Institute was transferred to the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations (FASO Russia). In accordance with the Order of the Government of the Russian Federation May 30, 2018 № 1055-R INASAN formerly subordinated to the Federal Agency for Scientific Organizations (FASO) fell under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (Minobrnauki).
