I will review the past successes and future prospects of using solar-type stars as tracers of cosmochemistry. The presence of convection complicates the modelling of stellar atmospheres, departures from LTE are present in the line-formation processes of certain elements. Beyond such technical questions, there is the possibility that cool stars physically alter their atmospheric abundances over long time scales. Nowadays, we can scrutinize the existence of such diffusive processes observationally. Examples will be given.
