Existing Indian astronomical observational facilities, both ground and space based, will be reviewed in the presentation with an emphasis on the developments taken during last decade. They cover a wide range in wavelength from gamma-ray to radio astronomy including UV. Advantage of longitudinal location coupled with presence of good observing conditions for optical astronomy in India will be emphasized citing scientific results.<\/p>\n

Recently, India successfully completed two major astronomy projects. First one is Giant Meter-wave Radio-Telescope (GMRT), an internationally unique observational facility at the meter wave. Other one is establishment of an optical observatory at Hanley, the highest location in the globe at an altitude of about 4.6 Km. The capabilities of these facilities will be presented along with a few important scientific results obtained from them.<\/p>\n

India has ambitious future plan of establishing observational facilities in both ground and space based Astronomy. Ongoing activities related to ASTROSAT, India’s first multi-wavelength astronomy satellite; Chandrayan, an unique Indian mission to Moon; TAUVEX, an UV survey programme and Measuring Oscillations in Nearby Stars (MONS), an asteroseismology experiment with Indian Satellites will be presented along with India’s plan for building 3 meter and larger size optical telescopes.<\/p>\n

Based on above presentation, possibility of scientific collaborations between the scientists of Russia and India will be discussed. The presentation will conclude with a discussion on the scope of both short- term (upto 3 years) and long-term (more than 3 years) proposals under Integarted Long Term Programme (ILTP) of Cooperation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
